The Valdichiana is one of four Arezzo valleys and extends south of the city. Here we can find Chianina cow breeding farms which provide the famous Florentine steaks.
Archaeological findings like the hypogeum tombs at Camucia and Sodo, those at Farneta, Foiano, Cignano, Castiglion Fiorentino and Cortona Museum, show that the Etruscans inhabited and cultivated this valley. Many artists were born here, including Luca Signorelli, Pietro da Cortona, Andrea Sansovino and Gino Severini.
Monte San Savino, an ancient Etruscan town which later fell under Medici dominion, is well worth a visit. Andra Contucci, known as Sansovino, was born here. The town still has Florentine and Roman Gates. The Cassero (fortified enclosure), with its impressive tower (XIV century), houses the Ceramic Museum.
Lastly, one is practically obliged to stop at a good restaurant or one of the characteristic trattorias. We are in Valdichiana where the meat and wine alone are worth the walk.
